hiiii,
from this month on, i will play with audio for this e-mail art letter or whatever we can call it. Do you send/receive voice messages often? Some friends of mine find them quite irritating. But i actually grew to love them - when i send one, i do not expect any urgent listening & response from the receiver. I just find them a more personal way to communicate, in which much less is lost due to lack of intonation. Many times i feel i need to fill in this space with emoji, but what is better than hearing the voice of your friend?
Thus, i’ve decided to try this out now. There is a version of this letter in an audio form. You can listen to it or skip it. It’s not identical to the text below for many reasons, but mainly - because i recorded it as if i would leave a voice message to you. Let’s see - your feedback [written or audio] is much appreciated :D
Hugs,
ål // ≧◉◡◉≦
p.s. currently working on creating a dedicated space for my more elaborate sonic experiments. Will try here, at substack, as a start and will see if that would work well - for now, the Reversed Words sound jam is published there. And a new piece is coming up in November [a hint: it’s connected to a ceiling leak drama that lasted for 4 months, xaxaxa].

[invitation to exhibition «s.å.t.e. - sounds at the exposure» @SIGN project space, Groningen // 2-11-2023 ~ 1-12-2023]
the show presents works that are on the border between visual art, sound, music and performances; an ambiguous perspective; an interdisciplinary view through interactive and interdisciplinary installations, or working methods, alternated with workshops, performances, and public moments. With this project, SIGN also participates in the Soundsofmusic festival, the top festival for experimental music and sound.
With artists Sara Elzinga, Ål Nik, Thordur Hans Baldursson, and Enrica Arbia.
With my new Sound Jam, part of the exhibition, i intent to create a safe space for people to make some sounds together. With the help of some visual invitations (prompts & visual scores), i propose the visitors to explore ways to make experimental music and sounds inside the gallery and to disrupt the traditional playing in a band. Their stage is as cosy as a living room and the sound-making instruments and objects are accessible and fun. This interactive installation invites the guests to explore traditional music-making elements and to disrupt them. To have conversations about how to approach the collective making. And also to experiment and try out ways to do it in a different way.
For the installation setup, i have the pleasure of collaborating with my friend - artist Gersande Schellinx [Amsterdam], who is creating some custom-made stands for my prompt visual cards <3
Would love to see you at the opening <3: 2nd of November, 16:00 CET at SIGN project space (Winschoterkade 10, 9711EA Groningen). There will be a Sound Jam session with me; and performances by the other artists who are taking part in the exhibition.

[reporting from FYI Talent programme, Amsterdam] this and next month i’m taking part in this programme that invited a group of artists to learn about the digital culture ecosystem in the Netherlands and how they can develop their professional art practice within it. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this group, so i plan to share my documentation of this journey: in the course of “seven intimate sessions and three studio visits, i’ll have the opportunity—together with 25 other emerging makers in digital culture—to learn from experienced mentors and professionals in the field”. Keep an eye on the highlights at my documentation page at ÅlWiki here.

[emprove had a beautiful & busy 2022!] An exciting and action-packed 2022 for EMPROVE! Two of my favourite sorceresses Olia Mineva & Danya Lam are the main ones involved and with them, we visualised how many, many precious moments and resources have appeared during the last year. See the visual summary and the full report here (text in Bulgarian)!

[join this year’s Empatheast international forum in Vidin, Bulgaria] Ideas Factory’s newest edition of the event “Geography of abandonment / revitalization” is happening on the 10-12 November 2023! The purpose of their forum this year is to show the importance, urgency and value of practices on how to decentralise cultural resources. That is a key pressure point in the system of sustainable regional development, which, unfortunately, is not happening at the moment. You will meet the results of the dozens of artists’ stays in villages of the Baba Residence network, as well as the whole diverse community created around them! Find out more here.
