▲ highlights: music-life milestone accomplished ⍢ // art residency at Extratonal // how to block Instagram to use your posts for AI
Helloooo,
This month, I'm writing to you from Rotterdam! I just arrived two days ago and I'm getting settled in ahead of starting an art residency at Extratonal, hosted by Varia. I'm excited to have dedicated time to work on a sound project, especially with a clear deadline to push me to finish and publish it.
In this letter, I'm sharing a couple of things: a truly unforgettable concert I went to last month, and a new visual artwork inspired by my nomadic lifestyle. Plus, I've included a handy guide on how to block Instagram from using your posts for their AI training.
Scroll down to check it all out, and hopefully next month I'll have some brand-new artworks to share with you!
cheers,
ål // ≧◉◡◉≦

✏ <postcard from Angus and Julia Stone’s concert in Amsterdam/>
📍 Angus and Julia Stone at the Royal Theatre Carré (what a cozy venue with really good sound!)
Last month I made a life-long dream come true. An ultra rare moment and privilege - to see live Angus and Julia Stone, a duo of brother and sister from Sydney (Australia). Have been waiting for them to come to Europe for at least 6 years and it was worth the wait (and the anxiety during the two 4-hour flights back and forth). What a privilege to see and listen live your all-time favourite music while the musicians are at their peak! <3
🖤 <4 works by Angus and Julia Stone/> It’s an impossible task to pick only 5 songs by this amazing duo, so I am sharing these with a disclaimer: they have at least 50 songs that should make it to any list. No kidding <3
_A heartbreak // inspired me so much that I made my own version of it while I was studying music production 6 years ago. Their song was released 10 years ago, happy anniversary!
// listen to it on my bandcamp
_Draw your swords // it’s from their album Down The Road by which I discovered them ~13 years ago. Re-discovered this song during the concert in Amsterdam, it was quite powerful listening to it live.
_Youngblood // while they were growing up, their father was a musician playing at weddings. He did all sorts of covers and when they were kids, they believed he was the author of all of those songs.. Until they figured it was a big lie :D Perhaps this formed their love for also making covers of other musicians’ works. This one is by far my favourite.
_Chateau // this song was on repeat during the covid-19 outbreak lockdown while being locked in a not-so-nice flat in Brussels and stressing out being in limbo super far from home. Actually, afterwards as well - over a year. It brought lots of nostalgia. :D p.s. Love the video.

● <residency at Extratonal: Platform for Extratonality, hosted in Varia, Rotterdam trains will always bring you to the future/> Thanks to the support of my friend Mistitron, I will have the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in Rotterdam and work on a sonic project I’ve been planning for some time. <3
_project: I’ve spent quite some time on trains during the last few years. I prefer them to any other type of transportation and they have a therapeutic impact on me. They have rhythm, soundscapes, and beautiful sights. The silence here is placed on those many backgrounds that help you get deep inside yourself and your thoughts. Usually, those moments are full of thoughts - memories surfacing from the depts, fantasies circulating your near future in a different place, plans you're trying to make.
I would like to reflect on the inner thoughts you have while travelling alone and express my reflections through sound. I would love to explore the relations between time, movement, train travel, inner thoughts and ways of experiencing the journey. I am looking for meditative sonic works that bring these elements into one place. I foresee sonic pieces that lie on the borderline between ambient music, sound poems, sonic art, and experimentation. Let’s see - you will be the first to know!
p.s. Thank you, mitsi, this is my first art residency ever <3

● <new visual artwork: where i am [not] - там, където [не] съм/> For my trip from the Netherlands to Cyprus, I took a Transavia direct flight. We flew above Sofia, just passed by my home city. I was looking at it for some minutes and was thinking of all of my family and friends who are there right at that moment. But I couldn't see them, I couldn't see anything that was happening there. Was anything happening there at all if I am not there to see it? Of course. I imagined my places around Europe as timelines of events, lives, things that were happening all the time. But for me, things only happen, they only have colour while I am there. All the other time is passive for me, invisible, grey. I felt the need to illustrate that. This is how this "map" was born. Map of missed and caught timelines, moments and colours.

▶ <how to object your content to be used for AI training: quick guide for Meta /> I came across this tutorial at Alexia Achilleos’ story on Instagram (thank you, Alexiaaa). I tried it and it worked. If you do not want Instagram to use your posts for training their AI and you’re based in the European Union, you can object:
1 // go to your Instagram account’s Settings and privacy
2 // scroll down until you reach About and click that
3 // click on Privacy Policy
4 // you will be redirected to a page explaining about their updates and info. Click on the link right to object
5 // it will lead you to a form to fill in
6// scroll down and fill in the form. In the field marked with the blue triangle add something like:
I do NOT give my consent for Meta to use any of the images, videos, audio, and texts, nor any multimedia content uploaded by me on my Instagram account for any use related to training and feeding Artificial Intelligence (AI) under the European regulations contained in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Afterwards, you will receive an email that will confirm your objection was respected.
